“What if players cannot fail in a game?”
2022.4
About
“How to make a game that makes the in-game failure become acceptable and hurtless for most players as well as assure players have a huge sense of accomplishment after clearing the game?”
Lab Code: XFinal was a solo project to answer this question.
Game Design
Two systems were designed for this game.
The first system was a paidia barrage game. Players can customize their levels and challenges in this system. Basically, players should make two characters in the game to meet with each other. The system itself does not set any obstacles between the two characters.
The second system was a Ludus rule-unlock game. They need to use Pts to unlock the right to adjust the parameters. Players can get Pts after they get through the levels they made. If they clear the level with higher difficulty, they will get more Pts. They can also earn Pts after they clear the targets. A total of 16 targets were designed in the game to guide players to build their own levels and encourage them to challenge higher difficulty levels.
Future Work
This game provides a good foundation for embedding AI-generated content. I plan to add AI suggestions into this game for players to better create their own levels. I want to further research how players would interact with this game.
My research questions could be:
- How efficient are the suggestions given by AI?
- How do these suggestions affect player behavior?
- Can AI suggestions improve the player experience?
- What kind of co-creativity I can find in this co-creation process?
- How to design a paidia AI-enabled game?
